Capital District Welfare Warriors, Albany, New York The Capital District Welfare Warriors is a chapter of the Welfare Warriors organization begun in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The organization of mothers and children receiving public assistance speaks out on welfare and other social policy issues. In November, one Welfare Warrior member testified before a state welfare reform hearing in Albany. She presented some statistics on welfare and the Warrior's position on welfare reform. She called for a number of progressive measures, including a guarantee for all children to child support, a government commitment to increasing the number of jobs, and a reduction of government aid to the rich. The Welfare Warriors have numerous speaking engagements addressing issues such as "What Can You Do to Stop the Assault on the Poor?" and "The History of Welfare," and a Warrior recently spoke at the State of the State rally at the Governor's mansion on January 2. The group is currently involved in the "Block the Block Grant" campaign to keep the pressure on President Clinton to sustain the federal commitment to income support for needy families.
