Montana will implement a pilot
program for the CHILD HEALTH
INSURANCE
PROGRAM (CHIP)
by Raquel Castellanos

The state of Montana's plan has been approved by the federal government for implementation of the CHIP program.  Thanks to the hard work of the Legislative Subcommittee on Children and Families, DPHHS will be taking applications to serve the first 950 children under a pilot
program.  Great appreciation goes to
Representative Carolyn Squires (D)
- Missoula and Senator William Glaser (R)
-Huntley,  for their efforts to approve this important program.
If you are working and your children do not have medical insurance, you may qualify for this CHIP.  Applications for the program will be sent out the last week of October, and the
deadline to apply is NOVEMBER 13.
(SEE PAGE 4 FOR DETAILS)
The federal government has
estimated 30,000 children in Montana are without medical insurance,  although this pilot will initially only cover 950
children this winter.  If the full program is approved by the 1999 Montana State
Legislature, the Department estimates it will be able to insure approximately 11,000 children.
WEEL members attended the
Children and Families Subcommittee
meetings this year and offered suggested
improvements on the state plan.  Our biggest concern was the $50 per child
co-pay in the original state plan.  Thanks to
