This Directory is the product of the Welfare Law Center's intensive efforts to gather key information about groups of low income individuals who are working for a fair and humane income support system in this country. This Edition includes listings for 189 groups in 44 states and as well as for 6 groups in Canada (this includes multiple offices for some groups). Many of the groups are made up exclusively of low income people; others have memberships that include both low income people.
The Welfare Law Center's Directory of Low-Income Organizations Working on Welfare Issues helps grassroots groups stay in touch with other groups across the country. The Directory, a unique state-by-state listing of grassroots organizations whose members are low-income people and that organize and advocate on welfare and related issues. The Directory is also posted on the website of the Center's Low Income Networking and Communications (LINC) Project, www.lincproject.org, and presented through an interactive map. The most recent edition includes 189 groups in 44 states. We are now updating the Directory and want to include your group.
Since the Directory was last published in 1999 there have been many developments in our community. New groups have formed and regional and national coalitions have emerged to address the upcoming federal welfare reauthorization debates. More groups have email addresses and websites, making it easier for all of us to communicate. The Welfare Law Center is updating the Directory to reflect these changes and promote communication among grassroots groups and their allies. The updated Directory will be posted on the LINC Project website and groups will be able to update their entries from the web.
Your input keeps the directory up to date. If you move or move on, please let us know. If you are or know a low-income grassroots organization who should be listed in the Low Income Directory, please use this form to suggest a listing. Advocacy organizations and other groups that are not low-income led, but work on economic security and social safety net issues should be listed in our resource bank.
