LINC'S general technology education efforts

Beyond LINC's Individualized Technology Assistance, we produce helpful, experience-based materials designed to either provide practical "how-to" technology advice or to demonstrate how grassroots groups have used technology. These materials are posted on the web and widely distributed at conferences and meetings. During the past year we produced the following:

Technology Tip 8: Using a Database Effectively
Technology Tip 9: What To Do When Your Computer Can't Open a File
Technology Case Study: Databases and Building Power for Low-Income People
Database Case Study: Miami Workers Center

We developed a Database Resource page for the LINC website which includes a PowerPoint presentation on Databases and Community Organizing, in addition to the database Tech Tip and Case Studies. We also published three articles about LINC Project activities and related grassroots group activities in the July 2000, December 2000, and March 2001 issues of Welfare News, the Welfare Law Center's newsletter which reaches some 1100 lawyers and legal advocates, policy advocates, and grassroots groups across the country.

initiatives to strengthen LINC

Additions to LINC Staff: In October 2000, Arif Mamdani came on board as the second LINC Circuit Rider. Arif, who came to us from the Fortune Society, joined LINC Senior Circuit Rider Dirk Slater and Project Director Gina Mannix. He brought a background in organizing and in training, as well as technology skills in Linux and programming that complement our Senior Circuit Rider's skills. Arif's presence has enabled us to expand our circuit riding site-visits and technical assistance, to develop an initiative installing Linux in older donated computers, and to bring the listservs in-house. In the summer of 2000 Arif participated in a two and a half day NYCOSC Train the Trainers program.

In the spring of 2001 Adam Horowitz served as a volunteer intern to develop and write the case study on CVH's use of technology to turn-out a crowd for it mayoral candidates forum.

Evaluation Activities: During the past year we instituted a number of strategies to review and evaluate Project activities. During the summer of 2000 LINC established two advisory committees to provide feedback and guidance on Project activities. The Technology Advisory Group now includes the following members: Denise Joines (Wilburforce Fund), Michael Ward (TechRocks), Jon Stahl (One Northwest), Rachel Daniell (Media JumpStart), Alice Aguilar (Technology Project at the Environmental Resource Center), and Julio Dantas (Progressive Technology Project). The Low-Income Group Advisory Committee now includes: Robin Acree (GRO, Missouri), Roz Lee (New York City Organizing Support Center), Wendy Young (National Welfare Engine), Diana Spatz (Lifetime, CA), and Susan Eavenson (WEEL). The committees function via email and LINC has solicited their views and received invaluable feedback from each committee.
In July 2001 LINC Project staff held a facilitated half day session to review and assess activities over the past year and begin planning for the future.
